Former Democratic Rep. Anthony Weiner Convicted of Unlawful Contact with Minors, Files to Run for NYC Council

Disgraced former attorney Anthony Weiner, DN.Y., whose once-promising career appeared to be destroyed by sexting scandals, is eyeing a political comeback and is exploring a return to the New York City Council.

Weiner, 60, who resigned from Congress in 2011 after admitting he sent pornographic images to women, has filed to run for council where he served for six years in the 1990s representing Sheepshead Bay and Brighton Beach in Brooklyn.

Campaign finance records list a campaign committee set up Friday by Weiner called Weiner 25, in addition to listing him as a candidate for council in Lower Manhattan.

In a telephone interview Tuesday with The Associated Press, Weiner said he is still “evaluating” whether to run for office. He said he opened the committee late last week so he could participate in a forum held by the Downtown Independent Democrats later this week.

He said in his weekly radio program that he has not fully decided to run and is thinking about how he will return to politics.

In response to calls from reporters and listeners of his 77WABC radio show last month, Weiner said he was not done with politics and that people in his community had approached him about returning to office.

“The way I always take these things out is ‘What does it mean to me and my neighbors?’ The city has always been the way I’ve looked at service, and, you know, we’re Democrats and we’re against… we don’t like people being victimized by bullies.

Weiner said New York City should always be a “bright laboratory” for the Democratic Party’s ideas and said that “for many years we had Republicans running this city.”

From 1994 to 2002, Republican Rudy Giuliani served as mayor. He was succeeded by Democrat-turned-Republican-turned-Independent Michael Bloomberg until 2013.

The City Council, however, has historically been heavily Democratic and currently has just six Republicans compared to 45 Democrats.

Weiner blamed part of the homelessness and immigrant crisis on a 1979 class action lawsuit filed against then-Gov. Hugh L. Carey and Mayor Ed Koch which led to the “Callahan Decree” – which established the right to shelter for homeless men.

He went on to list things he would like to see improved in the city, such as being able to walk into Duane Reade with his son and not find so many stores closed.

Weiner was once seen as Rep. Chuck Schumer’s protégé and had a close relationship with his colleague from Brooklyn. When Schumer vacated his House seat and successfully won the Senate seat for retiring Republican Al D’Amato, Weiner took over in 1999 and served for 12 years before resigning in disgrace after posting pornographic photos.

After his resignation, Weiner continued to send sexual messages under the pseudonym “Carlos Danger.” The main recipient, Sydney Leathers, who was 22 at the time, said the ex-lawyer called himself a “controversial man, always with middle teeth.”

He tried to make a comeback in 2013 to run for mayor but was hurt by the exposure of pornographic photos Weiner posted under a pseudonym.

A few years later, in 2016, he was embroiled in another sexting scandal when he split from his wife, Hillary Clinton’s longtime confidante Huma Abedin, who is now engaged to Alex Soros, the son of left-wing billionaire George Soros. In another photo posted by Weiner, she was lying in bed with her young son.

Later that year, claims emerged again, this time that Weiner had sexted a 15-year-old girl in North Carolina and had her laptop confiscated. Investigators have obtained emails related to Clinton’s classified documents scandal that preceded her loss to President-elect Donald Trump.

Weiner later diagnosed himself as a sex addict and in 2017 was sentenced to 21 months in prison for sexting — which cost him his mayoral bid at the time. He was released in 2019 and ordered to register as a sex offender.
