Did Arielle Kebbel Actually Run Underwater In ‘Rescue: HI-Surf’?

Rescue: HI-Surf put Arielle Kebbel through the wringer – and he was up for the challenge.

In the first season of the Fox series, viewers were surprised to see Kebbel’s character, Em, run underwater with a rock. Us caught up with Kebbel to get an explanation of what led to filming such a difficult role.

“I like rock climbing because [of] training to do,” Kebbel, 39, shared in the latest issue of Us Weekly. “We would first go into the pool and work with a world-renowned diver. He free dives like over a hundred feet too [with him we were doing] the wind is running out.”

Kebbel had a lot to learn, including how to “expand” his ribs and lungs while having to “breathe” from his back.

“We’re on a boat facing out and we’re doing breathing exercises. But it’s about preparation the night before in terms of sleep, what you eat, what you drink and what you don’t drink,” he said. “It’s just a lot about preparing your body to do this properly.”

Fixing the situation felt like an accomplishment for Kebbel, who said, “Being able to be underwater making a rock that runs above the sea and seeing the teachings work and doing its magic felt very special. It’s like, ‘Oh wow. I can take these tools anywhere now.’ I’m also lucky enough to have them watch me run safely, but that’s life-changing.”

Rescue: HI-Surfwhich premiered last month, follows the personal lives and professions of the open water lifeguards who patrol and protect O’ahu’s North Shore known as the world’s most famous and dangerous stretch of coastline.

In addition to Kebbel, the series stars Robbie Magasiva, Adam Demos, Kekoa Scott Kekumano, Zoe Cipres again Alex Ayiono.

“I’ve played an assassin, a firefighter, a police officer, and nothing can prepare me for the job of being a security guard,” Kebbel said. Usbefore realizing that “there are no second chances” when it comes to carving in rough waters. “What is this [Em has] always wanted to do. He is a true maverick. He is not only a great guard, but also a great diver and rower.”

The actor continued: “He’s also very nice at times and rough around the edges, especially when it comes to running his mouth, but it’s also because it’s always grounded in truth.

Demos, 39, who plays Will Ready, also figured out how Rescue: HI-Surf is different from all the other shows, adding, “It’s just a true look at the North Shore lifeguards … and how heroic these first responders are. I think everyone will be happy.”
