Wait, Stranger Things’ Finn Wolfhard Directs Slasher Summer Camp Comedy?

Given the long gap between Stranger Things‘ The upcoming fifth season has been eagerly awaited, it is not surprising that its actors have kept themselves busy with other projects. David Harbor does Marvel’s Thunder*; Millie Bobby Brown with the Russo Brothers’ Electric power next in his ever-expanding Netflix docket. But from what we can tell, only one Hawkins, Indiana’s co-directed, co-written hero, again joined him in the movie during the break: Finn Wolfhard, whose sharp jokes dropped the trailer today.

Summer Hell actually had its premiere at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival, which means midway Stranger Things with the arrival of the fourth season in 2022, Wolfhard has also been busy More projects (including starting at Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire). The official synopsis reads: “Summer Hell follows 24-year-old camp counselor Jason Hochberg (Fred Hechinger), who arrives at Camp Pineway thinking his biggest problem is that he feels out of touch with his young coworkers. He knows that a masked killer is hiding in the campsites, brutally taking out the counselors one by one.”

That doesn’t mean the main character’s name is Jason, of course. The film clearly rips a few tongue-in-cheek pages Friday the 13th-again Friday the 13th Part 2both films are about counselors who get kicked out before the camp opens for business—but he also enjoys other kinds of tropes. Ouija, who?

Wolfhard (who wrote and directed with Billy Bryk) stars in a cast that includes Bryk, Abby Quinn, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Pardis Saremi, Rosebud Bakeri, and Adam Pally . Summer Hell hits theaters on April 18, just in time for you to start rethinking all your camping plans.
