In 2019 King King the remake was a huge box office hit for Disney, but it was still surprising to hear that it was being followed up with a prequel. If you loved the original remake’s sweeping vistas and beautiful, photorealistic lions, Mufasa aims to provide more of that—and with the film now a month out, here’s the final trailer courtesy of this weekend’s D23 event in Brazil.
Told as Rafiki’s story to Simba and Nala’s daughter Kiara, the film focuses on the new series of Mufasa (Aaron Pierre), who begins here as an orphan who crosses paths with a pride of lions and their young son, Taka. (Kelvin Harrison Jr.), future Scar. Taka follows the line of rulership over Pride Rock, and as he always searches for his brother, he is overjoyed to have his parents add an orphan to his family.
Years later, the pride of boys is involved in a war with a group of white lions led by Mads Mikkelsen’s Kiros, who aims to control Pride Rock to achieve his goals. With their family defeated, it falls to the two brothers to lick their wounds and try to stop the white lions. During their adventure, they brush furry shoulders with other children The King is the King characters such as the aforementioned Rafiki, future giant Zazu (Preston Nyman), and Sarabi (Tiffany Boone), who ends up being Mufasa’s wife. And with each friend he meets, Mufasa comes more into his own as the leader his people need. He wonders how Taka feels about that…
The new trailer is very similar to the first, full of brotherly relationships and desperate escapades, as well as a tease of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s original music. Whatever you think about the expressions of the animals themselves, they still look as good as the photorealistic creations themselves. But will it all come together to become a more 2024 secondary origin story about the separation of two siblings? When will we find out Mufasa: King King will hit theaters on December 20.
