The 8 Best Mattresses for Back Pain, Tested and Reviewed (2024)

Almost ten years ago, I started waking up with back pain. Some days were just painful, some days I woke up and threw myself on the back. I found out that I have two permanent conditions in my spine: scoliosis, a lateral curvature of the spine that started in my twenties (usually young people get it, but I’m special), and spondylosis in my lower back, which is spondylosis. abnormal wear and tear on the cartilage in the spine. Both caused severe pain at night and in the morning, but it turned out that my weak, unsupportive mattress was the second cause. It didn’t provide the support I needed and resulted in a flare-up of pain.

I’ve tried it all: mattress pads, knee pillows, and mattresses ranging from very soft foam to hard wood. Some of these things worked, some didn’t. I, or another WIRED reviewer, slept on the bottom mattress for at least seven nights each, and monitored how it affected our back pain during the night and the next morning. My husband also gave me his answer, even though he doesn’t have chronic back problems.

After all these sleepless nights at work, I have discovered which mattresses have left my back and back pain in the past. Below are our favorites to sleep on if you have back pain, as well as tips on how to navigate back pain and sleep perfectly.
