Tamil Nadu Rain: Holidays for schools, colleges in 9 states today

Authorities declared holiday for schools and colleges in nine districts, including Villupuram, Tiruvallur, Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Ramanathapuram, and Trichy, amid heavy rains in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday.

Schools in Chennai, Kanchipuram, Chengalpet, Ariyalur, Sivagangai, and Pudukottai also remained closed today.

Madras University, Karaikudi Alagappa University, Bharathidhasan University, and the Directorate of Technical Education have postponed their scheduled semester examinations due to the forecast of heavy rain on Wednesday. The changed date will be announced later.

The IMD has predicted widespread heavy rain today due to a possible cyclone in the Bay of Bengal.

As per IMD update dated November 27, a deep depression over Southwest Bay of Bengal moved north-northwest at a speed of 13 km/h during the last 6 hours and centered at 05.30 hours IST, at the same location, about km 130 east-southeast of Trincomalee. , 400 km southeast of Nagappattinam, 510 km southeast of Puducherry and 590 km southeast of Chennai.

It is very likely to move northwestward and develop into a cyclonic storm during the next 12 hours. After that, it will continue to move north-northwestwards towards the Tamil Nadu coast along the Sri Lankan coast during the next 2 days.

“Heavy to heavy rain at a few places with very heavy rain at one or two places is likely in Cuddalore and Mayiladuthurai and Karaikal areas. Very heavy rain is likely at isolated places in Chennai, Thiruvallur Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram. , Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Pudukkottai district and Pondicherry,” according to an IMD release.
