Sasheer Zamata Talks About Being Agatha’s Last Girl All Along

Agatha Everything Goes came to a close this week, and while the series focused mostly on Agatha, Billy, and Rio, there was another important player: Sasheer Zamata’s potter’s expert Jen Kale. He inevitably joins the antihero team as they enter the Witches Road where, if all goes according to plan, everyone will get their deepest desires. And in Jen’s case, that means reclaiming the power she lost a hundred years ago.
In a serious interview with Collider, Zamata talked about the arc Jen went through to get her powers back. In it, he discussed how he views Jen and Agatha’s resilience, which is largely based on character: Jen is a “good person” who likes to be known and use that to help others. Although he lost his spark when the show opened, Zamata said that was reason enough for the two witches not to eat despite the same circumstances. “It’s more of a personality difference than what’s going on between them,” Zamata told Collider.[Jen’s] who knows everything and prides himself on being a good person, who heals and helps people, it might annoy Agatha, who doesn’t really help people.”
Still, power is power, and Jen would very much like to return home. When Agatha Everything Goes all said and done, he ends the program having served his purpose, and more importantly, alive. In the scene where Jen fulfills her dream, Zamata praised Kathryn Hahn and director Gandja Monteiro for allowing it to be her moment. “I was rarely able to access that part of myself when I was singing, and I felt lucky. […] To be able to retain your strength after 100 years sounds like a lot. It sounds like you are happy, but also sad because you are not happy yet [had it]like returning a friend.”
Comic fans know that Jen eventually becomes Witch Woman, and is a cousin of the original Ghost Rider Johnny Blaze. When asked about returning to the MCU, Zamata said he doesn’t know anything solid, but if Jen gets “a new deal, [or] dedicate his life to healing people? I like to play [Jen] so, a lot, and I think people really like to see him get what he came for. I would like to see him in reality use it the strength it regained.” And if it’s not Marvel, she said she’s open to doing basically anything, from doing more action to returning to horror and continuing her last girl series.
Agatha Everything Goes is available in full on Disney+.
