California House Democrats want to tie Trump to the controversial 2025 project

California House Democrats – who want to link former President Trump to the ultra-conservative Project 2025 policy plan – will hold a public hearing on Tuesday to highlight “its negative impact on hard-working American taxpayers.”
Rep. Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael) launched the Stop Project 2025 Task Force in June, calling it a “central center” to look into what members see as a “right-wing conspiracy to undermine democracy.”
Democrats see bringing attention to Project 2025 as a winning election strategy. Many polls have shown that the detailed plan is not liked by the majority of voters.
House Republicans in recent weeks have followed their campaign strategy, holding hearings and official events on the border issue and illegal immigration in hopes of wooing frustrated voters.
Trump wants to distance himself from Project 2025. He has stated that he does not know what it is about or who is behind it, even though it was written in part by his former advisers. His campaign has its own policy platform, called Agenda47.
Project 2025 was led by the Heritage Foundation, a right-wing think tank, with input from former Trump administration advisers. Among these proposals are disbanding the Department of Education, ending climate protection and deploying troops on the southern border.
Tuesday’s hearing is scheduled to include testimony from “everyday Americans” and examine the impact of proposals to criminalize abortion nationwide, raise taxes and cut Social Security and Medicare benefits.
Other members of the task force include Reps. Ted Lieu (D-Torrance), Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chair Nanette Barragán (D-San Pedro) and Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus Chair Judy Chu (D-Monterey Park).
