New Jersey Rep. Gottheimer says ‘we need to stand up to Trump’ when announcing his candidacy

New Jersey Democrat Josh Gottheimer, who announced on Friday that he is running for governor in 2025, has raised the need to “stand up” to President-elect Donald Trump following the “bad” election result.

Gottheimer, who entered the crowded Democratic Alliance field for governor of New Jersey, said Trump’s victory was “America’s terrible loss.”

“Let’s pause, the outcome of the election was a terrible loss for America. Every candidate for governor agrees,” he said Friday at a dinner in South Hackensack.

“We have to stand up to Trump,” he said.

Gottheimer identified Trump’s stance on abortion, the environment and gun safety as “big issues” with the president-elect.

“On major issues from health care to the environment to gun safety, every candidate has the same goals, and on the issue of abortion rights, we will all stand against Trump and his radical attacks on women’s health care,” she said. “We have to get Roe back.”

After promising to “stand up” to Trump, the representative for New Jersey’s 5th Congressional District said his top priority as governor will be to lower costs for New Jersey residents.

“But there is another story that explains who I am, and what I will fight for,” he said. “Jersey is now the fourth most expensive country in the nation to live in, and unlike everyone else in this race, I’m focused like a laser beam on the need to lower your taxes and lower your costs.”
