Neurosurgeon reacts to new advice on alcoholism

After the US surgeon general’s new warning about alcohol’s association with many cancers, a Florida surgeon said, “It’s about time.”

Dr. Brett Osborn, who also practiced the habit of living longer, applauded the new direction, saying that alcohol is poison.

“We’ve known this for a long time — it’s nothing new,” Osborn told Fox News Digital in an on-camera interview.

In particular, Murthy warned that alcohol can increase the risk of throat, liver, esophagus, mouth, larynx (voice box), colon and back cancer.

“I know the old saying that you can have a drink or two a day and it’s good for your heart — no, it’s not,” Osborn said.

In that case, an alcoholic patient came to the hospital after a serious fall. The man had a large blood clot on his face, which required emergency surgery.

“I don’t use it myself, get rid of it.”

“Because you’re an alcoholic … you’re going to do bad things,” Osborn said. “These patients, in general, their organ systems in general, do not work well, they do not work well. And in the end, it shows a bad result.”

For patients who are currently drinking alcohol, Osborn said they shouldn’t quit “cold turkey.”
