Meta unveils its new AI tool, Movie Gen

Meta recently announced a new AI generation model to help users turn simple text into images, videos, and audio clips.

Meta Movie Gen allows users to auto-encode and generate new videos, create their own videos, perform video editing, and generate audio, all trained on “a combination of licensed and publicly available datasets.”

If that seems a lot like OpenAI’s Sora, that’s because it is. But Movie Gen builds on Meta’s previous work with AI – you may remember, or use, for example, Llama Image. But Movie Gen is the third wave of its AI production work, which Meta says combines all of its previous approaches. “Similar to previous generations,” Meta wrote in a blog post, “we expect these types to allow for a variety of new products that can accelerate creativity.”

Meta notes that “generative AI does not replace the work of artists and animators,” but says the company “believes[s] with the power of this technology to help people express themselves in new ways and provide opportunities for people they might not otherwise have.”

“Our hope is that maybe one day in the future, everyone will have the opportunity to express their creative ideas and create high-definition videos and audio using Movie Gen,” the blog post reads.

All posts about this new technology are focused on the future, noting that you can’t use Movie Gen yet.

Chris Cox, Meta’s chief product officer, wrote in Threads that the company “isn’t ready to release this as a product anytime soon – it’s still expensive and the production time is too long – but we wanted to share where we are as the results are very exciting.”

The company said it is looking to modify this model to reach the public.

“As we continue to develop our models and approach potential future releases, we will work closely with filmmakers and creators to incorporate their feedback,” Meta wrote in a blog post. “By taking a collaborative approach, we want to ensure that we create tools that help people develop their natural creativity in new ways they may never have dreamed possible. Imagine animating a ‘day in the life’ video to share on Reels and editing it using text input, or creating a personalized birthday greeting customize a friend and send it to them on WhatsApp With creativity and self-expression in control, the possibilities are endless.”
