Mega-Star Returns With First Movie In 10 Years Is Netflix’s Biggest New Hit

Cameron Diaz is finally back in the movies, bringing her to the end of her 10-year hiatus, and it’s easy to forget that she spent her prime as one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars. In a country where it is common for stars and athletes to live for a long time, it is admirable that Diaz decided to take his money, invest in businesses he believed in, and choose to live the life he wanted. But now, he’s back with one of his best friends, Jamie Foxx, in Back to Action, a Netflix action comedy throwback that, if not for Diaz, is completely forgettable.

Back to Action would be lost in the sea of Netflix originals without the added attention of Diaz’s return. As Matt and Emily marry ex-spies who live under false identities while raising their children, Foxx and Diaz shine on the essentials. Mr. and Mrs. Smith if they have a healthy relationship. After showing off at a nightclub, the couple’s cover is blown, and it’s off to race to restore the Industrial Control System (or ICS, which is always a fun way to spell “Mcguffin”) while their kids are safe.
Joining the pair are the ever-cheerful Kyle Chandler and Glenn Close, in what is not his character’s revenge. Red but it is possible that since he has been given a sniper rifle and a license to kill. Unsurprisingly, the cast is stocked from top to bottom with A-stars but given how Back in Action ends, it’s clear that Netflix already has plans in place for a sequel. Whether that’s a good thing depends entirely on how you feel about old-school action comedy.
Cameron Diaz is still a star
Back to Action it suffers from being a Netflix movie, with the same unusual general lighting in every scene and the need for the actors to actively talk about what they are doing, in case someone is not watching the movie but it is on as background noise. Compared to Red Alertanother star-studded spy adventure, Foxx and Diaz’s caper is easily sublime, but fluffy and inconsequential. There’s no weight to the stakes, and everyone might roll their eyes at the camera when they deliver lines of goofy technobabble about ICS, but since the film has been number one since its debut, it’s clear that it has found an audience.
Holding onto the top spot as Netflix’s most popular movie since its debut, Back to Action it’s not original, it’s full of almost sketchy characters, very little motivation for the villain, cheap looking special effects, yet it’s an absolute blast. It is similar to the Rush Hour trilogy in that the charm and power of the leading stars elevates the entire film. Cameron Diaz has not lost a step and, at the age of 52, she can have a second act in Hollywood as successful as her first.
If it came out 10 years ago, Back to Action It would have been in theaters, but during Diaz’s hiatus, the entertainment landscape changed, and the Netflix original has the budget and star power of a major theatrical release. Most movie fans will agree that it’s not a change for the better, and as great as it is to see Cameron Diaz again, you can’t help but wonder if we missed something special. And of course, 46.8 million people have already watched the film on Netflix, so despite the lackluster release, it’s still a big deal.
