Earthquake in Gujarat: 3.7 magnitude earthquake hits Kutch

A 3.7 magnitude earthquake shook the Kutch district of Gujarat on Monday morning, the Institute of Seismological Research (ISR) said.

There were no reports of injuries or property damage, district officials said.

The tremor was recorded at 10.44 am with its epicenter 76 km north-northeast of Lakhpat, Gandhinagar-based ISR said.

This is the second earthquake of more than 3 magnitude this month in this region.

On December 7, an earthquake of 3.2 magnitude was recorded in the region, according to the ISR.

Last month, Kutch recorded a magnitude 4 earthquake on November 18.

Earlier, on November 15, Patan in northern Gujarat was shaken by a 4.2 magnitude earthquake, according to the ISR. Gujarat is a very earthquake prone area.

There have been nine major earthquakes in the last 200 years, according to Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA) data.

The January 26, 2001 Kutch earthquake was the third largest and second most destructive in India in the last two centuries, according to GSDMA.

A large number of cities and towns in the region were almost completely destroyed by the earthquake, which killed nearly 13,800 people and left 1.67 lakh injured.
