LG Display is launching its 4th generation OLED TV displays today, which are not only brighter than what they showed in 2024, but also more energy efficient and less visible. The LG OLED evo M5 was one of Engadget’s favorite announcements from CES 2025, thanks in part to the LG Display panels it uses.
LG Display’s 4th generation OLED TV panel can reach a maximum brightness of “up to 4,000 nits,” according to the company, which is 33 percent brighter than the previous generation panel. It’s worth noting that peak brightness isn’t the same as the same brightness across the display panel, but it’s still a significant improvement where OLEDs can’t stand out. Especially when those benefits are paired with better energy efficiency, which LG Display says is “about 20 percent larger” than the fourth-generation 65-inch panel.
The changes in the efficiency of the new OLED are due to improvements in the “structure and power supply system” of the panel while the improvement in brightness is related to the cleverness of adjusting the way LG arranges the LEDs in the panel. Fourth-generation OLED uses a “Primary RGB Tandem structure” that stacks independent layers of red and green light elements with two blue layers. Each layer produces more light which helps improve brightness and “color purity.”
LG Display also helps color reproduction (and possible purity) with a new film coating that reduces the amount of light that comes from the surface of the panel and the light that is absorbed and reflected inside the panel. The company says all these improvements are in the field of making better “AI TVs” but if that doesn’t bother you, it sounds like TVs with these new panels should look better too.
The fourth-generation OLED panel will appear in “mass-produced” TVs this year, and LG Display says the “RGB Tandem core design” will gradually be introduced to Gaming OLED monitors in the future, too. .
