Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau’s Dad Helps Run Flyers Practice

Guy, who coached his sons growing up, was a guest coach during the Flyers’ training camp practice in Voorhees, New Jersey, on Monday, September 23. He was invited by the head coach. John Tortorellawho attended Johnny and Matthew’s funeral earlier this month.
“He’s a coach and he’s done a good job with some young people here,” Tortorella, 66, said of Guy to press Monday, according to the NHL. “I thought it was better to bring him in with us. He was reluctant at first and we let him go in his own time. I think it worked really well today.”
Tortorella added that Guy has a copy of the Flyers’ practice schedule and hopes to return at some point.
“We will look next week and see if we can get him out here more often. Let him be a part of it. I don’t want it to just be, ‘Get out of here,’ I want him to be a part of it,” Tortorella said. “I think it’s going to be good for him to be a part of it, practice. He’s done it before. He’s a coach. It’s been fun to have him here. We’ll see where it goes.”
Although neither Johnny nor Matthew play for the Flyers, Tortorella added that he wants the Gaudreau family to be a part of the organization since they live in the area. Johnny was drafted by the Calgary Flames where he played for nine seasons before joining the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2022. Matthew did not play in the NHL but in the American Hockey League.
“I hope to know the family,” he said. “I think a number of coaches want to know the family. … It’s too bad it happened. It’s still quite new. It’s here, with us, down the road. We just want to be a part of it and help.”
Guy took the reins with Flyers players and helped practice, according to a video shared by X on Monday. After finishing practice, the athletes chatted with Guy and shook his hand.
“It was nice to have him there,” the defender Travis Sanheim said to press after practice. “I think any way we can help him is what’s going on. I hope this was good for him too. He has done a lot for this place and the community. It was great to be with him.”
News broke late last month that Johnny and Matthew died while riding their bikes in Oldmans Township, New Jersey while in town for their sister, Katie Gaudreauthe marriage of. Johnny was 31 and Matthew was 29. (Katie’s wedding was called off after the tragedy.)
Johnny and Matthew are survived by their parents and two sisters and their wives, Meredith and Madeline. (Meredith is pregnant with her third child with Johnny while Madeline is expecting her and Matthew’s first child.)
Us Weekly confirmed that the hockey players were beaten to death Sean M. Higgins, who is suspected to have been drinking at the time of the accident. He was arrested and charged with two counts of vehicular homicide. Higgins remains in jail awaiting trial.
