With the release of Creature Commandos this week, DC Studios wants audiences to know that every project will be different in its heroes and villains. In the series of titles that will form the new era of Warner Bros. superhero franchise house, studio head and director James Gunn does not want people to think that the projects will be specific to his filmmaking MO as it is known.
In an interview with Variety, Gunn explained that Creature Commandos it’s just a small taste of what to expect. “I just liked the idea of a soft introduction to a universe where metahumans exist, monsters exist, magic exists, and there are incredibly complex political situations,” he said. “And we’re seeing what the world of the DCU is like from an animated perspective where it’s as expensive to build a battlefield as it is to build a kitchen—not quite, but not as much as it would be in a movie.”
What DC Studios is cooking up isn’t a set menu, though. “One of the main things I want to get across is that you can do anything at DC Studios,” Gunn continued, “We can afford the whole family. We can do something for a general audience, like Superman. We can do something violent and sexual, like this—which I didn’t think was possible that violent and sexual; The maker of peace it’s violent and very sexual—but I want every project to have its own voice. It’s not about creating a world where everything is sex and violence. It’s about creating a world where we can tell a story about, you know, one type of character in different genres.”
