CBC News asked US customs and the Sorder Deffer Agency what Canadians with an X on their passports can expect if they try to enter the Trump administration’s country. An agency referred to CBC News in the White House press office has yet to respond to a question about the order.

Helen Kennedy, Executive Director of Advocacy Organization Egale Canada, said it is a “horrifying” and “sad” time for Canadians on gender passports – and for the 2SLGBTQ + community as a whole.

“We don’t know now what’s going to happen and that’s what you do most of the time for people to check security whether they’re going to go through security or not,” he said.

Fae Johnstone, Executive Director of Queer Monceum, told the Canadian founder that he will be avoiding traveling to the US for now for fear that his passport will be refused at the border.

“There is nothing short of an attack that exists when it comes to the existence of the various and diverse trans people, and around the world,” Johystone said.

Carrying a gender-neutral passport can lead to difficulties in general in the US, Kennedy said.

“There is nothing stopping any border control officer from stopping people with an X on their passports from entering their country,” he said.

“On another level it has now risen to official policy.”

Canada is renewing travel advisories in 2023

In 2023, the government updated its travel advisories for people traveling to the US after the wake of Anti-2SGBTQ+ laws passed in US States.

That advice tells travelers to be aware of laws that criminalize same-sex encounters and relationships, or target people based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Kennedy and Johnstone said they want Canada to update its guidelines on travel to the US and explain what it means for transgender and non-triple Canadians crossing the border.

“I’m sure our community is very connected to what’s going on in the US right now because people are paying attention. But I think the Canadian government has a responsibility to inform what’s going on,” Kennedy said.

In the meantime, Kennedy said he would recommend anyone with a gender-neutral passport avoid traveling to the US unless absolutely necessary.
