I come to you with bad news: Instagram shows your friends which Reels you liked.

It may encourage more engagement on Instagram Reels, but at what personal cost to all of us?

At the top right of Reels, you may see some of your friends’ profile pictures with little hearts in the corner of their pictures. Click that, and you’ll be taken to the “With Friends” tab. Each video will show you which of your friends liked the video, with your friend’s picture and heart overlaid on the bottom right.

This new feature is designed to help you stay in the app longer and encourage you to comment, like, and share Reels with your friends just like you would on TikTok. And it’s not the only effort Instagram is making to keep TikTok users on the app while TikTok is closed from the app stores (but it still works on desktop and your phone if you’ve already downloaded it). The platform reportedly pays influencers thousands of dollars to post on Reels before posting on TikTok. Replaced the old square grids with rectangles to prioritize Reels; released a new video editing tool called Edit, like TikTok’s CapCup; and increased the length of Reels to three minutes.

You can find out which Reels you are sharing with your friends unintentionally by following a few steps.

Navigate to your profile and click the menu icon in the top right. Select “Your Activity,” then select “Preferences.” This will show all the posts and Reels you’ve liked. To see only the Reels you like, click the “All Content Types” dropdown and filter by Reels,
