If Trump wins, he will need a reasonable Congress

Former President Donald Trump’s path back to the White House grows louder by the day. That’s an indication, at least, of recent polling data that suggests his race against Vice President Kamala Harris is tightening and that he’s narrowly Top 2% nationally in a recent Fox News poll.
Since his nomination as the Democratic nominee, Harris has enjoyed the “good vibes” the ultra-friendly media has made sure to cover him. But as Election Day approaches, even his media allies can’t shield him from the reality of public embarrassment over years of failed Democrat policies.
Fox poll shows America remains divided. Trump holds a national lead, while Harris maintains a narrow regional lead. Pollsters even delved into local data, looking for “swing districts” and found that the candidates were tied 49-49 in those areas. This means that Trump will need every single Republican vote to win, and a lot of independents and even Democrats are against it.

What is strengthening Trump right now is a clear lead on the issues that matter most to American voters. Fox polls confirmed that the economy is far from over and the issue that most voters are driving their decision this year. 70 percent of Americans say they feel bad about the current state of the economy. When was the last time 70% of Americans agreed on anything?
Trump will need help from Congress if he wants to pass his plan. File: Members of the House Chamber speak during the opening day of the 118th Congress on Tuesday, January 3, 2023, at the US Capitol in Washington DC. (Jabin Botsford/The Washington Post via Getty Images)
Trump beat Harris 53-45 among voters when asked who they trust most to manage the economy. Among the second issue most affecting voters, immigration, Trump beat Harris by a landslide 57-42.
The results are clear: Trump is winning on winning issues. If this trend continues, and he takes back the White House, he will have the opportunity to reward voters’ trust by addressing these difficult issues immediately. Voters will want to see him follow through on his plans to fight illegal border crossers and those who abuse our immigration system. They will want to see him carry out his anti-inflation plans by boosting American manufacturing, taxing foreign goods, and eliminating the tip tax (a very popular idea, which Harris apparently stole).

Even Trump’s recent visit to McDonald’s, where he worked at the drive-through, shows that he understands this. Rising fast food prices increased the American population during the Biden years. Trump deciding to come out and play down the inflation concerns of voters shows that he takes this issue seriously.
But Trump can’t fix it alone. He will need a Republican Congress equally committed to finding meaningful solutions to issues that matter to such a large swath of voters. Both the Senate and the House are up for grabs this November as well, and Republicans are smart to bolster support in down-ballot races, especially in suburban swing districts that are statewide contenders.
One thing is certain: to hold the House and possibly take the Senate to make Trump’s plan a reality, Republicans will need to rely on members of the swing district who tend to put pragmatism over politics. Republicans who win in blue states — especially those whose districts were won by Harris at the presidential level — are among the most in tune with our most diverse voters. They know their voters prefer Republican solutions, but their trust will have to be earned.
Take, for example, Rep. Lori Chavez-Deremer of Oregon’s 5th District is facing a tough challenge, but is campaigning smartly by focusing on the economy, rather than issues. Rep. Marc Molinaro, who changed the state in New York blue, quickly emerged as an important voice of sanity in the internal dynamics of the House, as occasional battles threaten to increase the majority of Republicans because of the theater of the far right.

Trump recently visited deep-blue California to campaign for Rep. Ken Calvert, whose district Trump narrowly won in 2020. a growing coalition of Republicans, announced at the rally that “Donald Trump will provide economic opportunity for American families across the great country.” If he has a commonsense Congress with a Republican majority to support him, he has a chance to make great strides in wallets and pocketbooks across the country.
The divided Americans who voiced their voices in recent Fox polls will not be impressed or satisfied by a Republican Congress that keeps falling into the trap of appeasing so-called extremists. They are showing that they are willing to trust Donald Trump on the Main Street issues that matter most to them. Trump is working hard to win the White House and take it, but Republicans will need to work hard to elect a commonsense Congress that can support Trump’s agenda.
