The driver was rescued after the SUV was found in the ocean off the coast of Orange County

Newport Beach police rescued the driver of an SUV that was found submerged in the ocean at Corona del Mar State Beach early Saturday morning, officials said.

Footage from the fire department shows a black Jeep sinking into the water and being hit by waves.

Newport Beach police arrived around 5:30 a.m. and rescued the man from the car, officials said. The unidentified person was taken to a hospital for evaluation and treatment.

Community workers used heavy equipment to pull the Jeep out of the water to be towed.

“The teamwork and determination of all firefighters was essential in overcoming the dangers posed by early morning surfing,” fire officials said in a social media post.

Police are continuing to investigate, including how the SUV ended up in the surf.
