EDMONTON, Alberta, Dec. 13, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Capital Power Corporation (TSX: CPX) is proud to announce its Genesee Repowering project is now complete as Genesee Unit 2 achieved a combined cycle of commercial operation today, resulting in Genesee Units 1 and 2 being Canada’s most efficient natural gas cycle site. Completion of this industry-leading project increases capacity at the Genesee Generating Station by 512 megawatts (MW) and reduces CO.2 carbon emissions by 3.4 million tonnes per year – representing a ~60% increase in capacity while reducing emissions by ~40%.

“Our Genesee Repowering project has a significant impact on North American power generation, demonstrating the important life of coal in valuable facilities. As we see a significant increase in energy demand with coal resources coming offline, there has never been a greater need or a better time to innovate at this scale,” said Avik Dey, President and CEO of Capital Power. “Our investment in Genesee ensures that we can continue to reliably power Alberta’s economy through the harshest winter nights and hottest summer days, while also opening up great opportunities to power more expansion drivers of power. This is a proud moment in our history that we are very excited to build on.”

“It is incredibly exciting to see the Genesee Repowering project come to full completion. This additional generation powered by clean natural gas is another big step to ensure Alberta’s electricity is affordable, reliable, and sustainable for generations to come. I commend Capital Power for continuing to innovate in Alberta’s electricity market,” said the Honorable Nathan Neudorf, Minister of Commerce and Utilities, Government of Alberta.

The estimated $1.6 billion project began construction in the summer of 2021 and required more than 5.8 million hours of work and a maximum of 1,250 workers on site. Located entirely beneath the existing Genesee Generating Station, the project involves the installation of two Mitsubishi M501JAC gas-fired combustion engines and three Vogt gas-regenerative generators, while utilizing the existing steam engine generator units. In June 2024, the project achieved light cycle operation in both units resulting in the plant being 100% natural gas powered – moving Capital Power and Alberta off coal five years ahead of the federal mandate.

The Genesee Generating Station is now able to deliver up to 1,857 MW of reliable, affordable and clean energy to Alberta’s growing economy. Significant baseload generation located on a 26,000+ acre site supports grid-wide reliability while opening up opportunities for future development, powering Alberta’s advantage in new technologies, industries and growth. With the project completed, Capital Power will be referring to the Genesee Generating Station as one facility in our portfolio (a total of 30 facilities instead of 32 if all three units are counted separately).
