Dr. Deborah Birx, who served in the first Trump administration, appeared on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” where she was asked more about Kennedy’s potential leadership. and his views on health issues such as vaccines.
“That’s why if he speaks clearly, I’m actually glad that in the Senate hearing he will reveal his information and the questions from the senators will reveal their information,” Birx said of Kennedy. “What I do know is that he is a very intelligent man who can bring his data and his evidence base forward.”
When Birx was asked about Kennedy’s controversial comments on vaccines, he said he expressed concern about problems “that many Americans believe are already a problem.”

“Every mother sees a kindergarten class where one of the children has autism,” she said. “That’s scary for mothers and fathers. They want to know why. So it’s not right for us to just say vaccines don’t cause autism. Let’s find out what causes autism.”
Birx, who served under Trump from 2020 to 2021, said the Senate confirmation hearing would be a good platform to see information from both sides of the argument.

“That hearing would be a way for the American people to really see the details that you’re talking about that we don’t see that problem right now, but what’s causing that?” Birx said, adding that addressing the cause of autism in children will be “critical.”

Birx said the White House’s messaging surrounding the COVID-19 vaccine has been counterproductive.
“I think what’s confusing people is that we haven’t been clear about what the COVID vaccines do or not,” she said. “And now people ask, what are my childhood vaccines that do and don’t do. And they don’t understand that some of the vaccines that their children get protect against both diseases and create herd immunity. And some that they get are for their child, like H Flu and pneumovax to prevent their child in serious illness.”
“And we don’t explain all of this very well,” he added about the goals and what they do.
Regarding Kennedy’s possible nomination, Birx said there is one important thing Kennedy can do to help him achieve success.

“I think the most important thing is which team you’re going to bring, because you’re talking about a large company with a very diverse team, which you have to bring together and, frankly, remove some of the duplication in between. these agencies to make them less expensive.”
