Dirt bikers, four-wheelers on the run from police in east Los Angeles County
A group of dirt bikers, performing street stunts and waving at helicopters, eluded a police chase in east Los Angeles County on Thursday, authorities said.
The California Highway Patrol responded at 3:52 pm to reports of a race between several motorcycles and dirt bikes on the westbound 60 Freeway at Rosemead Boulevard near South El Monte. When authorities tried to pull the runners over, the two drivers fled, the CHP said, leading a chase on overpasses and freeways.
The passengers, described by police as a young man and a teenager, both wearing hoodies, traveled the wrong way on the 710 Freeway, the CHP said, traveling at “various speeds,” although no specified maximum speed was released to the media.
The release also failed to mention the group of nearly 20 drivers who joined the fleeing motorcycle and four-wheeler riders, picked up by a KTLA helicopter during the chase.
Passengers waved to each other, waved aloft in the helicopter as they played wheelies and street stunts and swung by other drivers, police in tow. The group even stopped at a gas station to refuel at one point, KTLA reported.
The police eventually called off the chase and the helicopter that had been left to monitor them “couldn’t continue the chase.” No one has been arrested yet.
