A person flees from an SUV after it drives into Canandaigua Lake from the City Pier

CANANDAIGUA — A 19-year-old driver was able to escape from his car and swim to shore after he drove into Canandaigua Lake early Tuesday morning.

The driver was taken to FF Thompson Hospital to be treated for exposure and possible hypothermia, according to Canandaigua police.

Police said the driver stopped his SUV at City Pier and entered the lake while trying to make a U-turn. Police responded to the scene at 1:24 a.m. Tuesday.

Crews pulled a car from Canandaigua Lake on Nov. 12. after a driver accidentally drove into City Pier.

Drugs and alcohol did not play a role in the crash, police said. No other people were in the car and no other injuries were reported.

The driver was issued a traffic ticket for unsafe lane departure, police said.
