‘Continuous notifications’ like Apple’s Live Activities may be coming to Android
Google is reportedly working on a new Android API with what it calls Rich Ongoing Notifications, which would allow apps to display information at a glance in the status bar similar to Apple’s Live Activities in Dynamic Island on the iPhone. This is according to the reporter, who saw the code in the release of Android 15 QPR1 Beta 3. It can work more like a time tracker that appears now when you are on the phone, with a small text in a bubble at the top of the display that you can tap to open the application for more information.
Writing to you Android AuthorityRahman says the API will “allow apps to create chips with their own text and background color that live on the status bar.” It can be especially useful for things like transit updates, allowing users to track important information like departure times or Uber’s ETA while using other apps. The feature isn’t finished yet, though, and it may still be a while before we see it. Rahman predicts that it will come with Android 16.
