Brand offers THC- and CBD-infused mocktails as cannabis market to surpass $45 billion

As consumers around the US head into 2025 with a month-long commitment to abstain from alcohol, some are considering keeping the lack of spirits alive through February and beyond.

Among some of the most popular non-alcoholic drinks are virgin mojitos and piña coladas, booze-less seltzers and mocktails in egg-proof cans.

One brand, Modern Alchemist, takes alcohol-free drinking to a new level by offering mocktails infused with THC and CBD.

“Being in the beer industry for so long, we realize that not everyone is one-dimensional,” Modern Alchemist CEO Nathan Kelischek told FOX Business. “Everyone is not looking to buy alcohol all the time.”

Each can is made with 5 mg of both USA hemp derived THC and CBD.

Kelischek is one of the founders of Appalachian Mountain Brewery, a business based in North Carolina.

“We don’t think there’s anything wrong with alcohol,” Kelischek added. “I think the modern person or today’s consumer wants to have more options and more control over their next day or how they want to feel.”

In 2021, cannabidiol products generated 5.3 billion dollars and in 2026 it is expected to increase to 16 billion dollars, according to Statista. CBD-infused beverages are a slow-growing category.

This year, the cannabis market in the US is expected to exceed 45 billion dollars, according to the source.

Started by Kelischek and his cousin, Chris Zieber, president of Modern Alchemist, the brand was created with the goal of being inclusive by addressing the diverse needs of consumers.

“We’re very dependent on quality over the seltzer approach that most companies are going into now,” Kelischek said.

Modern Alchemist offers consumers three flavors: Margarita, made with real lime juice and agave syrup; Jungle Bird, made with fresh pineapple juice; and Citrus Spritz, made with yuzu, grapefruit and orange.

“They’re all for different times,” Kelischek said.

“Because we use fresh, real ingredients, you might have to shake the can a bit,” he added. “But most of that doesn’t come from dried hemp THC and CBD. It comes from the lime we use and the pineapple.”

Regarding the country’s laws and regulations, Kelischek said the brand complies with the laws and complies with the legal situation throughout the US.

“We have records that keep it from when we go back to the hemp plant and go through when the products are made,” Kelischek said. “Our advisor is clear about where we can sell and where we can’t sell.”

“If the government says it’s illegal to buy, our website automatically blocks itself,” he added. “You can buy online, but it’s only up to the states that it’s legal.”

Although Modern Alchemist has just started its journey, the brand is looking forward to more cheeky offerings in the near future.

“I think right now consumers want to try everything,” Kelischek said. “We have a variety of packages at our disposal.”

Kelischek said consumer feedback is “not helpful” as sales of multipacks consistently outpace individual packs.

“That’s been our best seller,” he said.
