An Indian politician with ties to Bollywood was shot dead in Mumbai ahead of a crucial election

A top politician in India’s financial capital, Mumbai, who was known for his close ties to Bollywood, has been shot dead just weeks before a crucial state election.
Baba Siddique, 66, was shot multiple times outside his son’s office in Mumbai on Saturday night, police said in a statement. He later succumbed to his injuries at Lilavati Hospital in the city.
Siddique has been associated with the Indian National Congress party for decades but had recently joined the party that rules the state of Maharashtra. He was close to many Bollywood stars and was known to throw lavish parties.

Maharashtra deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, who is from the same political party as Siddique, said he was shocked by the killings.
“The incident will be thoroughly investigated and strict action will be taken against the assailants. The mastermind of this attack will also be traced,” Pawar said in a statement.
The Press Trust of India news agency reported that two suspects have been arrested in the attack, and police are looking for another.

Broadcaster NDTV said that the two suspects are part of a gang that has killed many people in the past.
Elections in the state of Maharashtra are expected to be held in November.
