What’s new with ChatGPT on Mac?

The ChatGPT desktop app for Macs has been out since last May, but it has also received updates. OpenAI has added integration with developer tools like VS Code, Xcode, Terminal, and iTerm2, so users don’t have to manually copy and paste code into the chat. Integration with coding tools is available for ChatGPT Plus and Team users, with Enterprise and Edu access coming in the next few weeks. An OpenAI spokesperson said they plan to add access to other apps soon.

Desktop applications with third-party application integration and contextual understanding positions ChatGPT as a very useful tool to compete with Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini. To further complicate matters, OpenAI’s AI models support Copilot and OpenAI and have partnered with Apple to bring ChatGPT integration to Macs.

Copilot and Gemini still have the edge of a standalone ChatGPT app because they are deeply integrated into the Microsoft and Google ecosystem, easily connecting to software users already know. Copilot works with Windows 10 and 11, Microsoft 365 apps, and Edge. Gemini has various levels of integration with Gmail, Docs, Chrome, and more; the Google AI tool is also included inside the latest Chromebooks.

As the AI race is barreling ahead, the next stage is preparing us to be agents that can perform tasks on behalf of the user. Microsoft already has customizable agents with Copilot Studio, and both Google and OpenAI are rumored to be launching their own AI agents for web browsing and other tasks. The development of desktop applications creates deeper integration into the daily lives of users, which can be especially useful with agents who can think in multiple steps.
