The pair opened up about their years of friendship during the Tuesday, Nov. 12, episode of Duchovny’s “Fail Better” podcast, admitting that they faced some challenges while filming the hit sci-fi series, which ran from 1993 until it ended. 2002.
“Obviously we know each other deeply but we still know each other in a weird way,” began Duchovny, 64. “Even if it’s just history, I don’t know if we’ve ever sat down and said, ‘Hey, what was your childhood like?’
The actress went on to say that when it comes to her relationship with Anderson, 56, “the tricky part” is expressing how she feels about his actions.
“I think I could have talked about my friendship failure or my friendship failure or just asking for money,” he explained. “We had been working on this program for a long time when we did not have to deal with seeing each other without cameras. And there was a lot of tension, which obviously didn’t matter at work because we’re both crazy, I guess. We can just go out there and do what we have to do.”

Duchovny, for his part, admitted that he “could have behaved better” when the show premiered, noting that he and Anderson were “clueless” when they played their roles on the Fox drama. He also noted that he “never apologized” to Anderson when he abruptly left in season 7.
“I don’t know if I even talked to you about it,” he added. “Then he said he couldn’t do this show anymore the last time we did it, and I know that hurt me.”
Duchovny was talking about the revival of two periods of X files that was spread from 2016 to 2018. As the final season began airing in early 2018, Anderson publicly stated that she was done playing Scully for good.

“It’s time to hang up Scully’s hat. It just is,” she said at the TCA press tour at the time. “I came to a decision before we arrived [season 10]but I was really curious. I felt that six years ago [episodes were] it will be so. … There are so many things I want to do in my life and in my career and it’s been an amazing opportunity with an amazing character and I’m very grateful.”
Anderson has previously indicated that he might be open to another sport, but Duchovny said those initial comments made him feel like he wanted to leave the sport for her.

“It was the Emmys and it was the next day, and I had a private jet and I was giving you a ride, and you were drunk and I was very angry,” he said. “Then we sat on this private plane flying to Vancouver from LA without talking and you wrote me a letter. … It is a good book. I don’t remember exactly, but there was appreciation, it was all the things I wanted to hear, but it’s amazing that we didn’t get to have that conversation.”
According to Duchovny, he and Anderson began “butting heads” early in production X files that creator Chris Carter he asked them to engage in what can best be described as couples therapy. (They didn’t.)
Later in the episode, Anderson explained that it was his decision to leave X files after its revival it was about writing, not Duchovny.
“It was like Scully’s trail was no longer one of power and agency,” she said. “It was as if the old idea of what a woman is was seen. And that was all he could talk about, really [her son] William and I get William.”
