A Boeing plane burst into flames after a bird strike was reported, video shows

Flames from the wings of a Hainan Airlines Boeing jet were captured on video after the plane was reportedly caught by a bird after taking off from Italy.

The incident involving Hainan Airlines Flight 438, a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner bound for Shenzhen, China, occurred on Sunday near Rome Fiumicino Airport.

Pictures obtained by Viral Press show trails of fire coming from one of the plane’s engines as it flies close to the ground.

In another clip, the plane could be seen dumping fuel mid-flight before turning around and returning to the airport.

“On November 10, 2024, Hainan Airlines flight HU438 (Rome-Shenzhen) experienced a bird strike on the right engine during takeoff,” the airline told Viral Press in a statement. “To ensure safety, the crew returned to the airport as soon as possible.”

“We deeply apologize for any inconvenience this has caused and thank all passengers for their understanding and support,” it added.

The plane was carrying 249 passengers and 16 crew members, Reuters reported.

The plane made about a dozen circles off the coast of Italy before returning to Rome Fiumicino Airport, according to flight tracking website FlightAware.
