Dodgers announce Shohei Ohtani has surgery to repair torn labrum from World Series

The 2024 World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers did not see the regular season production of NL MVP Shohei Ohtani in the World Series because he was dealing with a shoulder injury he suffered in Game 2.

The Dodgers explained what happened with Ohtani, announcing that he underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on Tuesday to repair a torn labrum in his left, non-rotating shoulder.

The Dodgers added that Ohtani should be ready for spring training to pitch for the 2025 season.

Ohtani was trying to steal second base in Game 2, and was thrown out to end the inning as New York Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres tagged out.

Ohtani didn’t immediately come up when called, he quickly grabbed the shoulder. Replays showed Ohtani putting his left hand in the dirt to steady his slider, his shoulder exposed.

After the game, manager Dave Roberts said Ohtani still had some strength in his shoulder, but when the series returned to New York, the Japanese star was not feeling well.

Ohtani’s swing appeared to be over. And when he got to the base, he would hold the collar of his jersey in front with his left hand to slow down the movement.

Ohtani compiled the first 50-homer, 50-steal season in MLB history, but he couldn’t threaten the Yankees on the base paths, knowing he had to play it safe when he got on base because of his injury.

Ohtani had two hits in 19 at-bats, striking out once in each of five games.

However, Ohtani’s lack of production didn’t mean anything. Freddie Freeman, the World Series MVP, hit four consecutive home runs, and the Dodgers beat the Yankees in five games.

Despite the pain, Ohtani was jumping for joy with his teammates after the final game at Yankee Stadium, and he applauded the crowd at Dodger Stadium last week when the team attended an event in English.

Now, Dodgers fans will hope that Ohtani’s recovery from his surgery goes smoothly. He is expected to be able to run next season after not being able to in 2024 after Tommy John surgery.
