NFL commissioner Roger Goodell says international Super Bowl could happen ‘one day’: ‘It wouldn’t surprise me’

A trip to The Super Bowl can be very expensive for NFL fans.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell expressed hope for the game’s growth overseas ahead of Sunday’s game in London, adding that future plans may include having a major game in another country.

“We’ve always tried to play the Super Bowl in an NFL city — that’s always been a reward for the cities that are there. NFL franchises,” he said in response to a question about moving the game to a neutral site in other countries. “But things change. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if that happens one day.”

Nothing seems off the table as the league is getting closer to playing international games with the aim of increasing the popularity of the game.

Goodell outlined a plan that would include playing 16 international games every year if the regular season were expanded to 18 games. The process of deciding the host cities will be a detailed process, he added, that will include many factors.

“Brazil was a big step for us, because we had never played in South America,” he said, via The Athletic. “That was an important factor for us. We’re looking at other continents and other markets that we haven’t played in or haven’t played regular season games in, and we want to reach those games.”

To increase the number of international games, the regular season would need to be extended by one game, and the number of preseason games would need to be reduced to two.

“A lot of that depends on – can we continue to make the game safe, can we continue to adjust the way we run the offseason, and training camp and the season, so these guys feel comfortable being able to play at that time,” Goodell said of the challenges.

There are five international matches scheduled for this season.
