The second bill, however, is the first of its kind and arguably serves as one of the strongest protections for actors concerned about AI impacting their operations. While these bills provide state-level protections in California, various labor unions and SAG-AFTRA are urging support for the No Fraud Act brought before Congress that would make AI abuse illegal at the state level.
Speaking of SAG-AFTRA, if you closely followed their strike against Hollywood last year, you know they’ve been pushing back against AI abuse. Specifically, they advocated that actors should agree to the use of AI and be properly compensated for it.
Such advocacy was important because there was (and still is) concern that studios would make digital copies of everyone from extras to lead actors and try to use them continuously for free without compensation to the actors.
