Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) will not attend the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, a spokesperson for the organization said on Thursday.
A spokesman did not give a reason for Pelosi’s decision to skip the event, scheduled for Monday at the US Capitol. The decision was previously reported by ABC News.
Pelosi, 84, who has retained prominence and political influence in the Democratic Party – and her seat in the House – despite leaving her leadership post after Republicans won the House in 2022, has long had a contentious relationship with Trump.
He also broke his hip and was hospitalized while traveling with a bipartisan congressional delegation in Luxembourg last month — though he has returned to the halls of Congress since, including the Jan. 6 confirmation of Trump’s election victory.
Trump did not attend the inauguration of President Biden after losing to Biden in the 2020 election. He also denied that he lost despite all the evidence to the contrary – a lie that still holds true today. He became the first president to skip the inauguration of his successor since Andrew Johnson did so in 1869.
Pelosi called Trump “crazy” and unfit for office. Trump called Pelosi “evil” and an “enemy” of the country. The two lived for years. Pelosi raised eyebrows when she tore up a copy of Trump’s State of the Union address behind her in 2020. Trump angered the former speaker by mocking her husband’s attack at the couple’s home in San Francisco.
Former first lady Michelle Obama has also announced that she will not attend the inauguration, although former President Obama will attend, according to the Associated Press. The former first lady has also been critical of Trump.
