The weekendsixth album, Hurry Up Tomorrowit may be the last one he releases under his stage name.

The singer, whose real name is Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, said he is thinking of leaving the singer who has helped define his music and acting career after the release of the album on January 25.

The Weeknd, 34, opened up about the next chapter of his life in the cover story Variety published on Friday, January 10.

“It’s a place I have to enter that I no longer have the desire for. I feel like it comes with a lot,” he explained. “You have a person, but then you have competition for everything. It becomes this rat race: more accolades, more success, more shows, more albums, more awards and more number 1s. It never ends until you finish it.”

That thought came from part of a scene on stage at SoFi Stadium during his tenure After Hours Until Tomorrow visit in 2022. The Weeknd suffered a broken voice early in his show and never recovered. Eventually he had to give the audience refunds and promise a rescheduled date.

“Actually part of me was thinking, ‘You’ve lost your voice because it’s over; you mean what you said. Don’t stay too long in the party — you can end it now and live a good life,’” he continued. “You know? Put a bow on it: Hurry Tomorrow. Now we’re here. When is the right time to go, if not in your prime? When you understand who I am most, it’s time to go around.”

That doesn’t mean The Weeknd is giving up music. Even though he went deeper into acting, including the accompanying ones Hurry Up Tomorrow movie, which is also a star Jenna Ortegahe admitted that music will probably always be a part of his life.

“I don’t think I can let that go. But everything needs to feel like a challenge,” he said. “And for me right now, The Weeknd, whatever it is, is in the spotlight. No one is going to make The Weeknd better than me, and I’m not going to make him better than he is now. I think I have overcome every challenge like this person, that’s why I am very happy with this film, because I love this challenge.”

The Weeknd isn’t out to please anyone else. For example, he admitted it was “unfortunate” that his short-lived HBO show, The Idolhe faced a lot of criticism, but that’s not why he did it. It was about his identity as an artist. That’s why he’s looking forward to his next challenge, whatever it may be.

“I want to know what’s next,” she said. “I want to know what the future is like.”
