Detroit pastor Lorenzo Sewell says it is ‘impossible’ for Christians to be ‘politically neutral’.
A Detroit pastor told Fox News Digital that it is “impossible” for pastors and Christians to be “neutral” in politics.
“The gospel message is a political message. The Bible is a political book from Genesis to Revelation. We see that the Bible is a political book,” said Lorenzo Sewell, pastor of 180 Church in Detroit, Michigan.
“It is impossible to be politically neutral,” he added.
Sewell, a Republican, spoke at the last Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in July. He endorsed President-elect Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election and hosted the GOP presidential candidate at his church last summer.

He has been a a critic of identity politics.
“It’s important to be spiritual because you’re political. You can’t be spiritual and not be political,” Sewell added.
Sewell responded to a story from the Washington Post detailing a Los Angeles pastor’s struggle to unite his congregation before and after the presidential election.
Pastor Jonathan Hall, 41, a native of AlabamaHe led the First Christian Church of North Hollywood for two years. First Christian is part of the Disciples of Christ denomination and serves over 1,000 members. “Getting Republicans, Democrats and independents to sit down and pray for each other is becoming increasingly difficult,” the Post reported.

Several congregations left the church because of their political differences. One of the members cited the film Hall planned to show about Christian nationalism as “very biased” and “anti-Republican.”
Some left after finding out their peers had attended Trump’s inauguration.
Responding to the Washington Post story, Sewell emphasized the importance of the two relationships.
“We need to understand that you can’t have progress without being bipartisan. We understand that you have to work with Democrats and you have to work with Republicans now to make real progress happen,” said the native of Detroit’s east side. “So we have to have that understanding.”

Sewell told Fox News Digital that there are Democrats in his church.

“We believe that it is very difficult for you to be a Christian who believes in the Bible and be a Democrat. We believe that. Do I have Democrats in my church? Absolutely. We do not believe that every Democrat is a demon, but we believe that the Democratic platform is demonic,” he said.
“Bad, we don’t believe that all Republicans are revivalists. We don’t worship a donkey or an elephant. We worship a lamb that was slain.”
