Footage broadcast by South Korean television channels showed the plane skidding – and apparently without its landing gear. The plane overshot the runway and hit a barrier, causing a fiery explosion. Images showed thick smoke billowing from the plane engulfed in flames.

The aircraft involved was a 15-year-old Boeing 737-800 passenger jet. It was arriving from Bangkok when the crash happened at 9:03 am local time near the city of Muan, which is 180 miles south of Seoul.

Kyle Bailey, who represented the FAA’s safety team in the US, told Fox News that it appeared to him that the plane was traveling at high speed as it skidded down the runway before hitting what he believed to be a landing gear structure.

“I think that’s what caused the disaster on that plane,” he said.

Flight data and cockpit voice recordings of the aircraft’s black box were retrieved by the crew. They will be examined by government experts who are investigating the cause of the accident and fire, said Joo Jong-wan, the official of the Department of Transportation.

Although it may take months to determine the cause of the crash, Lee Jeong-hyeon, chief of the Muan Fire Station, said crews are looking into various factors, including whether the plane was struck by birds.

Department of Transportation officials said the airport’s control tower issued a bird strike warning shortly before it intended to land and gave its pilot permission to land elsewhere.

The plane was destroyed, the tail is the only visible part of the wreckage, a fire official told a television news conference.
