AirLight is compatible with iOS 13.0 and above (including iPads), Android 8.0 Oreo and above, and Bluetooth 5.0. It offers 12 presets designed for four different styles: Normal, Smooth, Curly, and Coily. Each preset is customizable and can be saved for future use, so once you’ve locked your settings, they’re always ready. There is also a fully customizable mode. Another new but welcome feature is the app’s usage tracker, which records how long you’ve been using the dryer. It sounds trivial, but knowing when to clean the filter can extend the life of the product (more on this later).
The app is clearly in its early stages, but it works well and leaves a lot of room for improvement. I can’t help but think how much better it would be with features like hot styling tips from the pros, quick video tutorials, or even curated inspiration boards for different hairstyles. L’Oréal has laid the groundwork here, and I’m curious to see how they build on it in the future.
In an industry where most gadgets are designed for landfills, the AirLight Pro is an outlier. L’Oréal says the AirLight Pro motor is designed for long-lasting, healthy use that can last up to 10 years of professional-level use—that’s two hours a day, five days a week. For anyone who has experienced dry hair that doesn’t last a season, this is the only promising suggestion.
What sets the AirLight Pro apart, however, is its adjustability. L’Oréal is making spare parts available as early as 2025. AirLight Pro also has built-in cleaning alerts for when cleaning is needed. Frequency varies depending on air quality, daily dust, and other particles (ie, hair spray). If the filter reaches a critical condition, the dryer shuts down until you clean it to avoid damage to the vehicle. I haven’t gotten to that point yet, so I can’t attest to how well it works, but I do like the idea of ​​a drought looking at its longevity.
At $475, the AirLight Pro isn’t cheap. But it’s only $45 more than the viral Dyson SuperSonic and has many advantages—it’s quieter than the Dyson, dries my hair faster, and can be customized with an app. And most importantly, you can fix it if it explodes after the warranty expires. If I’m going to spend almost $500 on a hair dryer, I want to make sure I only do it once. What AirLight Pro does is worth it.
