Trump says aid to Canada ‘makes no sense,’ suggesting Canada wants to join the US
President-elect Trump continued to lash out at Canada earlier Wednesday, criticizing American aid to its northern neighbor and repeating that Canadians want to be the 51st US state.
In his social media post, Trump wrote: “Can’t anyone answer why we subsidize Canada over $100,000,000 a year?”
“Nonsense! Many Canadians want Canada to be the 51st country. They will save more on Taxes and military protection,” Trump wrote.
The post comes amid tensions between the US and Canada over the incoming president’s plans to impose a 25% tariff on Canada for failing to resolve trade and immigration issues.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau flew to Mar-a-Lago to try to discuss the issue. Sources say that Trump became enthusiastic when it came to the trade deficit between the US and Canada, which he estimated to be more than $100 billion.

Trump reportedly suggested to Trudeau that if Canada’s tariffs are going to kill its economy, maybe Canada should become the 51st US state.

Trump’s threats to impose tariffs on Canadian goods, on the other hand, are unpopular with Canada, which is heavily integrated with the US economy.
About 60% of US crude oil imports come from Canada, and 85% of US electricity imports.
A Canadian Customs and Fisheries officer patrols the US-Canada border between Blaine, Washington and White Rock, British Columbia.
Canada is also the largest supplier of iron, aluminum and uranium to the US and has 34 key minerals and metals that the Pentagon covets.

About 3.6 billion Canadian dollars – or 2.7 billion US dollars – of goods and services cross the border each day. Canada is the top exporter of the 36 US states.
