The man who revealed his voice in AOL’s popular “You’ve Got Mail” message died Tuesday.
Elwood Edwards was 74 years old when he died, his longtime employer told WKYC Thursday. He had been dealing with what the Cleveland-based agency said was a “long-term illness.”
Edwards, best known to AOL users, gave his voice to the Internet service provider with his “You’ve Got Mail” notification about 35 years ago, according to WKYC.

The outlet described him as a “dear friend” and reported that he was a “graphics guru, camera operator, and jack-of-all-trades” during his long tenure at WKYC.

He once explained in a video published by AOL that his 1989 AOL voice job came from his wife, Karen, who “volunteered my voice” for “an upcoming AOL software.”
Her recording of “You’ve Got Mail” for AOL took place “on a tape deck in my living room,” she said in the AOL video. You also do “Welcome,” “Files Done” and “Goodbye” for the service.

“It started as just an experiment to see if it would get you and, lo, lo, in the mid-90s and my voice was heard more than 35 million times a day,” he said in a separate video published by Great Big Story in 2016.

Edwards’ voice became widely known among the general public alongside AOL. People with AOL Mail may still hear the “You have mail” warning in the first voice if they have certain settings turned on, according to AOL’s help page.
His popular work on “You’ve Got Mail” once led to him participating in an episode of “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” in 2015.
