8 Best Electric Bikes for Families (2024)

Electric cargo bikes come in two configurations. The first is front-loading bikes, also known as bakfiets or Long Johns, which place a cargo box between the rider and the front wheel. Another structure is the mid or long tail, which extends the rear end of the bike to accommodate more bodies and gears.

Both shapes have pros and cons. I’ve found that the bigger the rider, the more likely they want a front-loading bike, which in addition to hauling kids can be used as a large bin for yard equipment, tools, and more. However, you will need a garage or storage space and an excellent and reliable locking system; they are very difficult to steer and are very heavy if you have to go through roads or rough terrains; and they don’t feel particularly stable at slow speeds.

If you are a small or light person, you may choose a medium or long tail, which moves more like a regular bike. However, the weight is fixed at the end and rises to the top, which makes some people nervous about dropping it. I have a long tail; I prefer to travel well, but it can be annoying to make sure everything is strapped down to the rack or pannier. If possible, I recommend making an appointment at your local bike shop to try out a few models before committing.
