A cayoneer died in Zion National Park after an accidental fall near the exit of Heaps Canyon, Oct. 5.
The 40-year-old man has not yet been identified and was walking with three colleagues in the canyons when he fell between 150 and 200 meters, according to a press release from Zion National Park.
The fall happened around 18:00, reports say, and the group was following a permitted hike in Heaps Canyon when the accident happened.

The Zion National Park Technical Search and Rescue Team and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office were called to the scene and provided emergency medical treatment before the Utah Department of Public Safety airlifted the victim to Hurricane Valley Fire and Rescue and and Intermountain. The Plane of Life.
The deceased was pronounced dead before being taken to the hospital.
The next morning, the remaining canyoners were evacuated by a DPS helicopter.

Park officials issued a statement expressing their condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
“Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family and friends at this unimaginably difficult time,” said Zion National Park Superintendent Jeff Bradybaugh.
